What is Nitric Oxide?

Nitric Oxide, or NO, is a colorless gas. In the environment, nitric oxide reacts with oxygen, ammonia and moisture in the air to form Nitric Acid, a significant component of acid rain. Nitric Oxide also can react to form smog, particulate matter (PM) and ground level ozone. Sometimes, Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Nitric Oxide (NO) are collectively referred to as Nitric Oxides (NOx).

Where does Nitric Oxide come from?

Nitric Oxide is primarily produced by motor vehicle combustion as well as power generation and industrial combustion. Diesel engines in partiular are associated with Nitric Oxide emissions.

Where are the health effects of Nitric Oxide?

Nitric Oxide is hazardous to human health in part because Nitric Oxide can lead to the formation of other air pollutants, including smog, acid rain, particulate matter and ground-level ozone, all of which can negatively impact health.
