Why does fitness matter?
Regular physical activity can help reduce your risk of disease and improve your mood. According to the CDC, adults 18 years and older need at least 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of aerobic activity, like a brisk walk, each weak and strength training on two or more days a week. We included fitness as an environmental factor in this app because certain geographical features of your environment such as proximity to parks, prevalence of sidewalks, etc, can influence fitness. In addition, there is likely a cultural effect where if your neighbors engage in physical leisure activities, you are more likely to as well.
We measure fitness by looking at the percent of adults 18 and older who have no leisure-time physical activity. The higher this number is, the worse the fitness score we assign to a given area.
